Generating, changing and checking PDF files in Java applications usually means wrestling with low-level file structures or relying on heavy, closed tools. iText Core, known as iText for Java, gives developers a dedicated SDK for these jobs, with both high-level layout APIs and low-level document control. The library covers document creation through its layout engine, manipulation such as merging PDFs and adding content, digital signing, and form creation and editing. It also handles PDF/A and PDF/UA documents, FIPS-compliant cryptography, barcode generation and SVG support. Optional add-ons extend it to HTML and CSS to PDF conversion, OCR, redaction and optimization. It is aimed at Java developers building document workflows, and it can be used as a Maven dependency inside any application, including native images compiled with GraalVM. The core is distributed under the AGPL license, with commercial licensing available from the vendor.
