Overview
Many people want ChatGPT-style assistance without sending their prompts and documents to a third-party cloud. Jan is a desktop application that lets you download and run open LLMs such as Llama, Gemma and Qwen directly on your own machine, with everything working offline when you choose.
Jan also connects to cloud providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and Groq when you want them, and offers custom assistants for specialized tasks. It exposes an OpenAI-compatible API on localhost:1337 so other applications can use your local models, and supports Model Context Protocol integration for agentic workflows.
Jan is built for individuals and developers who want control and privacy over their AI tools. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux, and can also be built from source. It is released under the Apache 2.0 license.
