Private photo vault to hide photos and videos with strong on-device encryption.

About

Photok is a secure private photo vault for Android that helps you hide photos and videos using strong AES-256 encryption. It protects sensitive media in an encrypted gallery and keeps your private memories safe on your own device.

All files are encrypted locally and only decrypted in memory while you use the app. No cloud upload is required.

Photok is open source, ad-free, and built with a privacy-first philosophy. It is developed by me (Leon) and public volunteers.

Download

Photok is available on Google Play and F-Droid. Aswell as some alternatives.

Features

  • Import photos and videos from your gallery
  • Organize private media into albums
  • Export files anytime
  • Create and restore encrypted backups
  • Unlock your vault with fingerprint authentication
  • Share media directly to the vault
  • Option to hide the app icon
  • Automatically delete original files after import

Privacy-Focused Design

Photok is designed for people who want real control over their private photos and videos. Encryption happens on your device, and imported files are only decrypted in memory while the app is in use.

Photok can use minimal privacy-friendly analytics to improve stability and user experience. These analytics are never used for advertising or cross-app tracking.

Translations

Photok is available in the following languages.

[English] [Arabic] [Chinese (China)] [Dutch] [French] [German] [Indonesian] [Italian] [Portuguese (Brazil)] [Russian] [Spanish] [Swedish] [Turkish] [Urdu (India)]

Initial texts are hand picked for English and German. The rest is machine translated. Contributors from the community then review and fix these machine translations on demand.

Differences Between Google Play and FOSS

Photok is distributed in two variants: Google Play and FOSS (F-Droid, GitHub, IzzyOnDroid). The core app is identical, but some features differ due to platform requirements and privacy expectations.

FeatureGoogle PlayFOSS
TelemetryEnabled by default (can be disabled in settings)Disabled by default (can be enabled in settings)
Telemetry opt-in promptNo prompt shownShown once after first unlock
In-App ReviewRequested after usage milestonesNot available
Photok ProAvailable as an optional add-onNot available

Why is telemetry off by default on FOSS? F-Droid flags apps that transmit data without explicit opt-in as having the Tracking anti-feature. No data is ever transmitted unless the user has actively opted in.

Photok Pro

Photok Pro is an optional add-on for the Google Play version of Photok. It unlocks additional features while supporting ongoing development and helping me build more features for Photok.

The FOSS will stay true to its name and continue to be free open source software.
