Overview

Teams shipping containers, infrastructure code and applications need to know what known vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, exposed secrets and software licenses they are deploying. Trivy is a comprehensive security scanner that answers these questions from a single command-line tool. It scans container images, filesystems, remote Git repositories, virtual machine images and Kubernetes clusters, and it can look for OS packages and software dependencies (SBOM), known CVEs, IaC issues, sensitive information and licenses. Trivy is distributed as a single binary, a Docker image and in most common package managers, and it can be run locally or integrated into CI pipelines such as GitHub Actions. It supports most popular programming languages, operating systems and platforms. Trivy is licensed under Apache-2.0 and is maintained by Aqua Security. It is aimed at DevOps, platform and security engineers who want to shift security checks left into development and keep clusters and images under continuous review.

Targets (what Trivy can scan):

  • Container Image
  • Filesystem
  • Git Repository (remote)
  • Virtual Machine Image
  • Kubernetes

Scanners (what Trivy can find there):

  • OS packages and software dependencies in use (SBOM)
  • Known vulnerabilities (CVEs)
  • IaC issues and misconfigurations
  • Sensitive information and secrets
