Overview

Converting documents to PDF usually means installing and maintaining Chromium, LibreOffice and a set of fonts, which quickly becomes fragile in production. Gotenberg packages these tools into a Docker image and exposes them through a simple HTTP API: you send files or a URL via multipart/form-data and receive a PDF back. Its main capabilities cover HTML, URL and Markdown conversion through headless Chromium, and Office document conversion through LibreOffice for more than 100 formats. It can also merge, split, rotate, flatten, watermark, stamp and encrypt PDFs, produce PDF/A and PDF/UA compliant output, take screenshots, and read or write metadata and bookmarks. Gotenberg is released under the MIT license and is aimed at developers who need document generation inside their own backend services. It runs as a self-hosted container, started with a single docker run command and called with curl or any HTTP client. The documentation and a live demo are available on the project website.
