Overview

Applications that need to display, parse or rasterize PDF documents must handle a complex file format, and embedding a reliable renderer is a substantial engineering task. PDFium is the PDF library used by the Chromium project, and it can be embedded in other software to do this work. PDFium reads and parses PDF files and rasterizes their pages into image output. The public/ directory exposes the embedder API, which the project keeps as stable as possible. The repository includes the standalone pdfium_test program, which renders pages of a PDF to PPM or PNG files from the command line, along with unit, embedder and pixel test suites. The library is built with GN and Ninja using the same tooling as Chromium, targets Windows, Linux and Mac on x64 (and x86 on Windows), and is expected to be built with Clang. Developers who embed PDF rendering in their own C++ projects can use it to build the library and integrate it with their applications.
