Overview

Coding agents become more useful when they follow reusable instructions, but installing those instructions by hand for each agent and project is tedious. skills is a command-line tool that discovers, installs, lists, updates and removes agent skills, which are SKILL.md files with YAML frontmatter, from GitHub, GitLab, Azure Repos, any git URL or a local path. The CLI supports OpenCode, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and more than 75 other agents. Skills can be installed per project so they are committed and shared with a team, or globally for use across all projects. It can also generate a prompt from a single skill without installing it, and works with private repositories through existing Git, GitHub CLI or SSH credentials. It is aimed at developers and teams who use several coding agents and want a consistent, scriptable way to manage their skills. It is released under the MIT license and runs with npx. Short version: install with npx skills add owner/repo.

skills

The CLI for the open agent skills ecosystem.

Agent skills are reusable instructions that teach coding agents how to perform tasks, from reviewing code to working with a library. Discover skills at skills.sh.

Supports OpenCode, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and 75 more.

Install a Skill

Requires Node.js 22.20 or later. Run this from your project:

npx skills add vercel-labs/agent-skills

Choose the skills and coding agents to install to. Skills are installed to the current project by default; add -g to make them available across projects.

# Choose one skill and agent
npx skills add vercel-labs/agent-skills --skill web-design-guidelines -a claude-code

# Browse available skills
npx skills find

See the installation reference for source formats, private repositories, and all options.

Other Commands

CommandDescription
npx skills find [query]Search for skills
npx skills listList installed skills
npx skills use <source>@<skill>Use one skill without installing
npx skills checkCheck for available updates
npx skills update [skills...]Update installed skills
npx skills remove [skills...]Remove installed skills
npx skills init [name]Create a skill template

Read the CLI reference or run npx skills --help for examples and options. Experimental commands are listed below.

Use a Skill Without Installing

Generate a prompt for a skill, or launch a supported coding agent with it:

npx skills use vercel-labs/agent-skills@web-design-guidelines --agent claude-code

Omit --agent to print the prompt instead. See skills use.

Experimental Features

CommandDescription
npx skills experimental_syncSync skills shipped by npm dependencies into your project
npx skills experimental_installRestore project skills recorded in skills-lock.json

Some npm packages bundle instructions for your agent alongside their code. Sync links them into your project so they update with the dependency, and also installs skill packs declared in package.json:

npm install -D skills agent-browser
npx skills experimental_sync -y

See the experimental commands reference for options, the skills field, and the RFC behind it.

Supported Agents

The CLI detects installed agents and lets you choose where skills are installed. See all supported agents, installation paths, and compatibility.

Creating Skills

npx skills init my-skill

Edit the generated SKILL.md with instructions for your agent. See creating and sharing skills for the format and discovery rules.

Documentation

Telemetry

The CLI collects anonymous usage data. Set DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 or DO_NOT_TRACK=1 to disable telemetry and security-audit requests. See what is collected.
