Overview
Producing 2D animation requires a drawing, timing and compositing toolkit that can handle thousands of frames. OpenToonz is a 2D animation application that covers this workflow, derived from Toonz Studio Ghibli Version, the software Studio Ghibli customized over many years of production.
The project is published by DWANGO and distributed as a desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux. Installers and older builds are available from the official site and the GitHub releases page, and the source can be built locally following the platform guides in the repository.
OpenToonz is aimed at animators, studios and hobbyists who want a free, modifiable alternative to commercial 2D animation software. The source is released under a Modified BSD License, so it can be used and changed freely for business or personal work.
