Overview
Teams and individuals often need quick diagrams, wireframes or sketches, but polished diagramming tools can feel slow and heavy for rough ideas. Excalidraw is an open-source virtual whiteboard that produces hand-drawn style drawings on an infinite, canvas-based surface.
The editor offers shapes, arrows with binding and labels, free-drawing, images, shape libraries, dark mode, undo and redo, and export to PNG, SVG or clipboard. Drawings are saved in an open .excalidraw JSON format. The hosted app at excalidraw.com adds real-time collaboration, end-to-end encryption, offline PWA support and shareable read-only links.
Excalidraw is released under the MIT license. Developers can embed the editor in their own apps through the @excalidraw/excalidraw npm package, and it is also available as a VS Code extension.
