mkdocs-material

From public sources

Material for MkDocs is an open-source theme and framework for MkDocs that turns Markdown files into a searchable, responsive static documentation site.

CLI toolCategory: Developer Tools · Documentation toolsOpen sourcedata checked Oct 15, 2026

Overview

Writing documentation is often slowed down by the need to build a site from scratch with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Material for MkDocs solves this by layering a polished, Material Design-based theme on top of MkDocs, so authors can focus on Markdown content and get a professional static site in minutes. The theme adapts automatically to desktop, tablet and mobile screens, offers built-in search, and supports more than 60 languages. Colors, fonts, icons, logos and behavior can be changed through a few lines of configuration, and the theme can be extended with plugins. Because the output is static, the site is fast, lightweight and fully owned by the team, with sources and generated files kept under their own control. It is aimed at open-source maintainers and product or engineering teams that need a knowledge base or project docs. It is distributed as a Python package under the MIT license and is built with the mkdocs command-line tool, with a Docker image also available.

[!WARNING]

Material for MkDocs reaches end of life on May 5, 2027. Critical fixes and security updates continue until that date.

We're continuing our work with Zensical, a maintained successor built by the team behind Material for MkDocs. It carries forward what we've learned from building documentation tools with this community, with Markdown authoring, a familiar design, and full control over your content. Zensical is Open Source and MIT-licensed.

You can evaluate Zensical alongside MkDocs using your existing mkdocs.yml. Check plugin compatibility and compare your pages, navigation, search, and customizations before switching. The classic theme variant preserves the appearance of Material for MkDocs. See the migration guide for the steps and current compatibility details.

Upcoming changes on November 5
